Given that Key West is an island, there is plenty of fresh fish available. So many restaurants are on the water, and they have fresh caught fish daily. Some restaurants even cook the fish you catch yourself. Blackened fish is my favorite way to eat it.
Key Lime Pie
Key Lime is a citrus fruit that comes from the Key West area. They are smaller, tarter, and more aromatic than other limes. In Key West, the key lime is used in many local dishes and desserts, with the most famous being the Key Lime Pie.
The pie is made with a sweet, creamy filling made from condensed milk, egg yolks, and key lime juice. It is all baked inside a graham cracker crust. Sometimes the crust might have some nuts mixed into it. On top it usually has some dollops of whipped cream.

Incredibly Walkable and Easy to Navigate
Key West is a very walkable city, just another reason why it is worth visiting. There are Ubers, bikes, shuttle buses, and the Conch Train. This means that if you drove to Key West from Miami, you can park your car at a hotel and then walk around the city.
Most importantly, Key West is easy to navigate. Larry and I get lost very easily so it’s good to have cities that are easy to navigate. Given its size and water on all sides, it’s pretty hard to get lost.
What is the Conch Train in Key West?
Above, I mentioned the Conch Train. It is a small train that connects all the main attractions of Key West. While it is easy to walk around, sometimes the heat can get to you and we need the train. Not only does it take you to different attractions, but it is also a great way to tour the city. I will say it can be a little on the expensive side, so I recommend pre-booking the train. If not, there are always Ubers.
Experience Cuban Culture
Key West is 90 miles north of Cuba. Given its proximity to the island, there is a large Cuban influence in the whole South Florida region, especially Key West. There is great Cuban food to eat as well as many ways to learn about the rich Cuban Culture.
The Key West Cigar Factory is a unique way to learn about Cuban Cigar rolling. Ybor City in Tampa is another place to learn about cigars. There are also a bunch of Cuban coffee shops and restaurants to check out. One cool way to experience Cuban culture is to experience traditional Cuban music and dancing at Mallory Square every night for a sunset celebration.

Visit the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum
One of the most popular historic places to visit in Key West! Ernest Hemingway’s home is open for tours. Here you can see the famous author’s six-toed cats. From the 1930s to the 1950s this was home of the Nobel Prize-winning author.
Inside the house and museum, you can learn about Hemingway’s life and work. Additionally you can see some of his personal possessions including his typewriter and fishing gear. It is incredibly interesting to learn about one of America’s most famous writers; it is truly such a unique experience.

Harry S. Truman’s Little White House
Serving as President Truman’s winter White House, this little historic house is now a museum. It also served as the meeting place for other US Presidents and government officials. Initially built in the 1890s, it has been well preserved to reflect President Truman’s time.
Currently, the Little White House is open for tours. Visitors can explore the house and grounds to learn about President Truman’s life and legacy. It is a must-see attraction for all history buffs.
The Key West Lighthouse and Keepers Quarters Museum
Featuring an 1848 fully restored lighthouse and lighthouse keeper home, this lighthouse has now been converted into a museum. Visitors can climb the lighthouse for panoramic views of Key West.
Additionally, this unique lighthouse has unique architecture that dates back to the 1800s and is influenced by immigrants from the Bahamas. It has pastel colors and details that make it look straight out of a storybook. Finally, you’ll see lots of relics from the Civil War and Cuban history, as well as learning about cigar factories.

Located on 322 Duval Street, this is the oldest house that is still standing in Key West. The house showcases the popular Key West style known as a conch cottage. This house has been standing since 1829. It was built for Captain Francis B. Watlington and his family.

The Wild Chickens (illegal to feed)
One of the things you’ll notice immediately upon arrival is all the wild chickens and roosters roaming the streets. According to legend, they were brought over from Cuba and the Caribbean Islands for food. They are now considered the “Gypsy Chickens of Key West.”
It is important to note that it is against the law to feed the chickens of Key West. You can get a fine of $250-$500 for feeding them. So keep your distance!
Dry Tortugas National Park
One of the most famous national parks in Florida! Located about 70 miles west of the island, this national park is only accessible by boat or seaplane. It offers beautiful blue waters and an assortment of marine life and birds to observe.
Dry Tortugas offers incredible historic sites, amazing snorkeling, and of course, some of the bluest water. Bork a day trip to Dry Tortugas here, but make sure to do it in advance because it sells out incredibly fast.

It can range from very festive to poolside parties to beachfront bars and live music. Duval Street is the main attraction when it comes to nightlife. Some of the most popular places include Sloppy Joe’s, Rick’s, the Green Parrot, and Irish Kevin. People also enjoy going on pub crawls down Duval Street. One of the most famous drinks is the Rum Runner of Key West.
Lovely Beaches
Smathers Beach is located on the south side of the island. It is popular for its white sand and crystal-clear water. It is both the biggest and most popular beach in Key West. Of course, beaches are a great reason to visit Key West. It is, however, the farthest from downtown. You can rent water sports gear as well as beach chairs and umbrellas here.
Higgs Beach Is a pretty small beach within C.B. Harvey Rest Beach Park. Within this area, there is a restaurant, gardens, restrooms, and showers. This beach also has beach chairs and umbrella rentals. The parking is free, but there is no lifeguard on duty.
Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is definitely a great local beach spot to soak up the sun and enjoy some great history. This fort played a crucial role in the Civil War. Visitors can tour the fort and learn about its history. Additionally, there’s fishing, swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing at the beaches. The Southernmost Beach Cafe is a great place for some drinks or appetizers while enjoying the sunset.
South Beach is located at the south end of Duval Street. The beach has shallow and calm waters. There are a few refreshment stands and a small cafe, but no restrooms. You may want to bring your own food or eat before.
