Are you planning an international trip and considering driving while abroad? An International Driving Permit (IDP) might be just what you need. This blog post will guide you through the process of obtaining an IDP through (American Automobile Association) AAA in the United States. I’ll explain why you might need one and provide details on its usage and cost.
Why Get an International Driving Permit?
An IDP serves as a valuable document for several reasons:
- International Recognition: It’s recognized in over 150 countries worldwide and is required in more than 80 countries if you plan to rent a car or drive a private vehicle.
- Language Barrier Solution: The IDP translates your driver information into ten languages, making it easier to communicate with local authorities even if you don’t speak the language.
- Car Rental Requirement: Some countries require an IDP for visitors to rent a vehicle, for example Spain.
- Additional Identification: Even if you’re not planning to drive, an IDP can be a helpful form of identification when dealing with foreign authorities.

Where and How to Use an International Driving Permit
An IDP is valid for one year from the issue date and should be carried alongside your valid U.S. driver’s license. It’s important to note that an IDP is not a standalone driver’s license but a supplement to your existing license.
While countries like Canada and Mexico recognize U.S. driver’s licenses for short-term tourist trips, many other nations require or strongly recommend an IDP. Always check the specific requirements of your destination country before traveling.
How to Obtain an IDP Through AAA
AAA is the only organization authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue IDPs in the United States. You don’t need to be a AAA member to apply for an IDP. Here’s how to get one:
Pro-Tip: Although there are plenty of online services that offer digital or fast-turnaround International Driving Permits, the only ones that are legally accepted by other countries are the AAA version. You may have mixed results with other providers.
- In-Person Application:
- Visit your local AAA office
- Bring a completed IDP application (available at AAA offices or downloadable online)
- Present your valid U.S. driver’s license
- Provide two original passport-sized photos
- Pay the permit fee
- Mail Application:
- Mail a completed IDP application to your nearest AAA office
- Include two original passport-sized photos signed on the back
- Enclose a photocopy of both sides of your U.S. driver’s license
- Include the permit fee
Cost of an International Driving Permit
The cost of an IDP through AAA is $20. However, there may be additional fees:
- If applying by mail, there’s typically a $5 return mailing fee, bringing the total to $25.
- Passport photos, if needed, can be obtained at AAA offices for an additional fee or via any other facility that provides passport photos (such as pharmacies).
Important Notes About an International Driving Permit
- You must be at least 18 years old to apply for an IDP.
- IDPs are valid for one year and are not renewable.
- If you’re already overseas, you can still apply by mailing your application to AAA’s Florida office.
- Processing time is typically 10 days for in-person applications and 2-4 weeks for mailed applications.
Although they say it may take up to 10 days, when I visited my local AAA office, they were able to process my application and give me my new IDF in under an hour.
An International Driving Permit can provide peace of mind and convenience when traveling abroad. Whether you’re planning to drive or simply want an additional form of identification, an IDP is a small investment that can make your international travel smoother and more enjoyable.
Remember to always check the specific driving requirements of your destination country before your trip. Safe travels and happy driving!
