Hitting up the beach is one of my favorite things to do! Since I grew up in Florida, I was always used to having the beach a stone’s throw away. Even in Boston, we lived close to the beach. So naturally, it became important for us to head out to the beaches in North Carolina and see what they had to offer. North Carolina did not disappoint! Here are many of the beaches to explore for your next trip to North Carolina’s eastern shore.
Outer Banks North Carolina Beaches
Probably the most well-known area of North Carolina when considering going to the beach. There is even a whole Netflix show about the Outer Banks.
Avon Beach
Avon Beach has stretches of sand mixing with rolling dunes to create a stunning backdrop for your beach vacation. The area was developed with the beach in mind. This means your views aren’t obstructed by big resort hotels or large buildings. Visitors can walk through paths to get to the shoreline.
Along with the beach there is a mix of local restaurants and bars specifically around Avon Fishing Pier. The Pier is truly the hub and center of town.
Carova Beach
You may know the famous wild horses in North Carolina, but you might not know where they are located. Most likely you’ll find wild horses in Carova. It is one of the most secluded beaches in America and their famous horse residents. Well, they’ve been there for centuries.
Since it is so secluded, the community is small with very few vacation rentals however the beaches are pristine. Important to note that there are no roads that lead to Carova Beach. Instead, you will need an off-road vehicle. Several areas in town rent 4x4s, however, if you have a 4WD car you can drive on the beach. You can drive across the sandy beaches to find the perfect spot for fishing, a picnic, or a swim.
Pro-Tip: In order to drive your car on the beach you do not need a beach permit, but to park on the beach you do need a permit. The permit can be purchased online here.
Corolla Beach
Corolla Beach is a favorite of many people heading over to the Outer Banks. Like Carova Beach many beautiful wild horses roam along Carova beach. There are wild horse tours to ensure you get to see them. These one-of-a-kind horses are Colonial Spanish Mustangs.
Much like Carova, you will need to take a 4×4 or a 4WD vehicle onto the beach. However there are beach accesses before the 4WD portions begin which makes it easier to get onto the beach.
While you’re there pay a visit to the Center for Wildlife Education and learn more about North Carolina’s rich biodiversity. Additionally, you can let out your thrill seeker at Corolla Adventure Park, and learn to surf, kite board, water ski, or kayak. Finally, Head to the top of Currituck Beach Lighthouse to get a gorgeous view of the beaches.
Duck
As the name implies this Outer Banks town has seen a lot of waterfowl hunting in its history, additionally, it is the birthplace of Duck Donuts. Duck is a relatively small town packed with amazing beaches and amenities which makes it stand out next to the larger towns in the Outer Banks. It is also among the most family-friendly beaches in North Carolina and the entire United States.
Bordering Currituck Sound and the Atlantic offers the ideal location for water sports. Additionally, the town is brimming with vacation rentals, tons of restaurants, so much shopping, and even an outdoor theater! Duck Town Park also hosts many different special events year-round which gives visitors even more to do.
Of course, the most important part is the beaches of this town! It is a great beach, full of shells for the collectors! It is also incredibly beautiful to watch the sunrise. Plus if you travel with your dog, Duck Beach allows dogs year-round. This is rare.
Pro Tip: This town’s beach access points do not have public parking, so you’ll need to book a place close by.
Kitty Hawk
Infamously known for its “First in Flight”, Kitty Hawk is the town that the Wright Brothers chose to take their first, historic flight. The reason this beach was picked is because of the miles of open beaches and the gentle onshore breeze. The town has a rich history to explore due to the Wright Brothers.
There is a national memorial in the center of town with plenty of dining options surrounding it. Kitty Hawk has many public beach access points. Its central location in the Outer Banks also lends to exploration of the nearby beaches and towns.
Nags Head
Clearly a popular beach as Nags Head is by far the busiest beach in North Carolina. Nags Head’s location as the first town after Whalebone Junction really helps as well. As the most developed town along the Outer Banks, means you’ll experience more entertainment, dining, and accommodations. Additionally, it means that Nags Head does not have the same sleepy feeling as the rest of the Outer Banks.
Nags Head manages to be incredibly popular without losing its small town charm. Along with the Iconic Jennette’s Pier, Nags Head offers dunes to explore at Jockey’s Ridge State Park as well as some surfing in the ocean. The waves are so good that the Eastern Surfing Association hots its Mid-Atlantic Regional competition here.

Rodanthe
Moving from Nags Head to the much sleepier town of Rodanthe. They have fully embraced the laid-back life of the Outer Banks. Given its much more secluded on the southern part of the peninsula, it gives you plenty of freedom to roam across the unique beach. There are plenty of outdoor activities and nature preserves. Luckily, this small town offers everything within walking distance from the beach to the different accommodations.
Waves Beach
Waves is an outdoor activities hub on the Outer Banks. The perfect combination of water and wind provides endless outdoor entertainment. Since Waves is far from most of the main tourist hubs, you’ll find yourself surrounded by mostly locals. Given its location and weather conditions, it’s an excellent place to learn how to windsurf. Additionally, you can do other water activities like kayaking or boating.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore NC Beaches
Buxton
This tiny, hard to find town is known for two things. The first being the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. The second being “The Point” which is one of the nation’s finest surf fishing spots. As a secluded beach you’ll be one of the few visitors there to enjoy the beautiful beaches. Additionally, campers can actually get permits to sleep in the lighthouse’s shadow. Its pretty special.
Ocracoke Island
Ocracoke Island is one of the top-ranked beaches in the country for good reason. This completely secluded island is a peaceful getaway from the crowds of peak summer Outer Banks. In order to get to this secluded getaway, you’ll need to drive past the town of Hatteras and onto a ferry. Be sure to buy a ferry ticket at least 20 minutes before departure. There are many seasonal accommodations and restaurants on this island to make the visit even more enjoyable.
Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge
Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is the largest unobstructed beach land in Cape Hatteras. As a wildlife refuge you cannot actually stay there, but it is an incredible beach. This famous refuge provides accommodations for over 400 migrating birds, as well as many other wildlife. Additionally there are many nature trails to take or even a kayak to explore by water.
Cape Lookout National Seashore NC Beaches
Shackleford Banks
Accessible only by boat or ferry, this 8 mile barrier between Beaufort and the Atlantic is a pristine beach with the widest variety of seashells. Shackleford Banks is home to the famous “Banker ponies”. By protecting the Beaufort from the Atlantic, the Beaufort is able to house many different plants and animals. It is truly a beautiful place.
Crystal Coast North Carolina Beaches
Atlantic Beach
To get close to the action head over to Atlantic Beach. It is one of the most popular and developed beaches in North Carolina. There are so many activities to do in town that it is truly a place for everyone. Not only do you have the beautiful beach, but you can also head for the wonderful walking trails, the aquarium, many restaurants, a movie theater, and of course do some shopping. Given that there is something for everyone it is a great beach for families.
Found on a barrier island between Bogue Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, this 85-mile shoreline offers many water-related activities as well. You get the warm salty ocean water on one side of the island and on the other the clear and calm Sound. There are many different types of rentals. With so much to do, you could spend a whole week here without ever leaving.
Emerald Isle
Atlantic Beach’s neighbor is Emerald Isle. Known as the Jewel of North Carolina, Emerald Isle, has something for everyone. Emerald Isle gets its name from the maritime forest that shades the island in green. Be sure to take relaxing walks through the forest. The Bogue Inlet Fishing Pier stretches into the ocean providing excellent fishing locations and views for all. Not only are the beaches beautiful, but the town also offers many dining options and even a few adventure parks for those who need a beach break. Hammocks Beach State Park (Bear Island)
The best publicly managed beach in North Carolina. It is a 4-mile haven for those looking to get far away from other people. Bear Island is only accessible by boat. The easiest way to reach Bear Island is either to hire a boat or via the ferry (when it is in service). Some brave travelers may paddle their kayaks to the island.
Bear Island is best for those seeking to get into nature. There is an untouched maritime forest on the island. As well as information about the different natural habitats and exhibitions managed by the State Park. There is one visitor center, otherwise, you mostly have the place to yourself. So bring a hammock, and a picnic, and sit back and enjoy the beach.
Pro-Tip: If you arrive in the morning before most boats, you may have the island mostly to yourself. That’ll give you plenty of time to search for shells, sand dollars, and shark teeth!
Topsail Island North Carolina Beaches
Surf City
For the most relaxing experience on Topsail Island, head to Surf City. It is a city that offers a quiet vacation spot with lots of local restaurants and shopping. There are no amusement parts or adventure lands here. Here you are getting a slice of the Beach life. However, if you want some activities, there are kayaks and boat rentals available.

North Carolina Beaches Near Wilmington
Carolina Beach
One of the most popular beaches in this list is Carolina Beach. For many good reasons. This beach and town offer visitors a boardwalk, many delicious restaurants, and an amusement park complete with a Ferris Wheel. Additionally, Carolina Beach is incredibly accessible for all people. They have mats in the sand for beach friendly wheelchairs to take people all the way into the water. The lifeguard stations have beach wheelchairs for you to use.
Fort Fisher State Recreation Area
Fort Fisher Start Recreation Area is part of a collection of protected lands. Another area that is managed by the State Parks and borders the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Fear River. A great perk of this area is that you can access the beach from the visitor’s center on foot. Seasonally there is a section that allows 4WD access (with a permit). People enjoy surf fishing at the beach as well.
Kure Beach
Kure Beach (pronounced cure-ee) is a pretty quiet, family-friendly beach town. It is close enough to Wilmington to enjoy everything it offers without all the people. This charming town has the oldest fishing pier on the Atlantic coast as well as many exciting events and festivals throughout the year. Head to the water to enjoy the full stunning coastline. The water also offers surfing, kayaking, or paddle boarding. It is truly one of the most crystal clear watered beaches.
Masonboro Island
Want to fully relax and unplug at your beach vacation? Then head to Masonboro Island Reserve. This isolated and protected beach has more than 5,600 acres of beach, salt marsh, and tidal flats. Given its location and protected status, it has incredible wildlife viewing opportunities. Additionally, you can go shelling, dolphin spotting, searching for ghost crabs, or swimming. It is the perfect way to reconnect with nature while disconnecting from the rest of the world.
Wrightsville Beach
A quick day trip from Raleigh puts you on one of the most popular beaches in North Carolina, Wrightsville Beach. It has a gorgeous sandy beach, dazzlingly clear water, and a fun town. Additionally, it is very close to Wilmington for additional shopping and restaurants. It is truly a beach town that has it all.
Johnnie Mercers Pier is a popular destination for the fishermen in your group. Wrightsville Beach also offers many water sports like surfing, kayaking, and stand up paddle-boarding. Additionally, you can go tubing or parasailing for the adrenaline junkies.
Given how active the island is you’ll find a wide range of accommodations from camping to resorts to oceanfront rentals. There is also an active nightlife with plenty of dining options, events, bars, and a thriving brewery scene.

Brunswick County NC Beaches
Bald Head Island
A uniquely car-less community is what you find when you make your way to Bald Head Island. Once you get off the ferry you’ll notice that the only vehicles here are golf carts. Typically they are going from the beach to the golf courses to the delicious restaurants and back. Given the challenge to get to the island (a ferry, no cars) people tend to make the mistake of skipping this pristine beach. This means it is even more empty for you to enjoy!
Oak Island (Caswell Beach)
Right over the border from South Carolina is Oak Island, more specifically Caswell Beach. It is close to both Wilmington and Myrtle Beach which gives you the full beach vacation amenities. Oak Island is a thriving area with tons of seafood restaurants. Be sure to stroll through Southport. Oak Island has an iconic lighthouse that offers beautiful panoramic views as well. Finally, the islands are small enough that you can bike throughout and never take out your car during your stay.

Holden Beach
Known as the “family beach of North Carolina” Holden Beach stands out among its neighbors as a quieter more local beach. Compared to its neighbors it is a far less commercial beach which means it attracts fewer visitors. Other than the beach you can take a relaxing bike ride through the “Olden Holden” trail. It is a very seasonal place so expect more things to be closed off-season.
Ocean Isle Beach
Typically the go-to beach is the “best beach” in North Carolina, and it is easy to see why. This absolutely gorgeous beach is pristine and sees far fewer visitors than some of the other more popular beaches. Yet it has many amenities, activities, and plenty of accommodations to rival some of those bigger ones.
Along with the excellent beach, there are many fun parks here. They range from the adventure-friendly Swamp Park to Ocean Isle Beach Park and Town Center Park playgrounds. If that isn’t up your alley you can go kayaking in the marshes. Finally, the sea turtles also call Ocean Isle home. The Sea Turtle Protection Agency oversees the nesting and hatching seasons, truly a wonder!
Sunset Beach
Finally, we make it to Sunset Beach found in the southernmost part of North Carolina. This beautiful beach is definitely a “saved the best for last” scenario. Named one of the 21 Best Beaches in the World by National Geographic, this island does not disappoint. Known for its incredible sunsets, this tranquil and pristine beach provides the unique opportunity to see both the sunrise and sunset over the ocean.
While you could spend all year relaxing on the beach, there are several things worth checking out too! Talk a walk down the shores and you’ll find the Kindred Spirit Mailbox. You’re invited to share your experiences and reflections inside. Additionally, the Sunset Beach Pier gives you an incredible walk with amazing views. The town offers the Ingram Planetarium, the Swing Bridge & Museum, and some golfing as well. Dining options are nearby in Calabash.

Unlike Florida, there are significantly more waves here, but it is just as warm and refreshing (unlike the frigid Boston beaches). Because of this most of the beaches have incredible water to go swimming. To get calmer, more crystal clear water head to the barrier islands and swim on the side of the Sounds.

Luckily you can’t go wrong as most beaches have plenty of restaurants, accommodations, and entertainment options for kids. Some towns are definitely much sleepier which can be good for some families, but boring for others. Finally, having many public access spots to the beach gives Duck the winning edge.
