I will start this post by saying I LOVE waterfalls. Going on hikes and finding waterfalls at the end is probably one of my favorite hiking results. North Carolina has some incredible hiking trails, here are some of the most scenic waterfalls in North Carolina’s Mountains.
Yes, hiking to the top of a mountain for the views is indescribable and can’t be matched, but that’s how I also feel about waterfalls. The added bonus is that in some cases you can also go swimming. It’s the perfect refreshing spot after a hike, especially in summer. This is truly another reason why North Carolina is worth visiting.
Less than 1-mile round hike
Dry Falls
0.25 Miles; Roadside Attraction
The main trail to get to Dry Falls is behind the falls so you will get wet. But the payoff is worth it for this beautiful view. Most of the trail is paved and easy to walk. It is not a long walk, easy to access, and totally worth it. You can also bring your dog along. One of the coolest parts about this waterfall is that you can walk behind it. Remember that you’ll get wet!
French Broad Falls and Mill Shoals
0.5 Mile Round Trip
Along the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway (AKA NC Highway 215) are many different waterfalls. Notably the twin waterfalls of French Broad Falls and Mill Shoals. These twin waterfalls are found in a North Carolina religious retreat. Although the sign at the entrance of the walk says “Private Enter at your own risk”, you’ll find many beautiful cascades. It is an easy walk for all waterfall lovers to enjoy.
Both these waterfalls are 15 feet high. There are boulders that allow you a perfect perch to soak in the majestic twin falls. Near these waterfalls, you’ll also find Cathedral Waterfalls. As I said it truly is a paradise for all waterfall chasers.
Whitewater Falls
0.6 Miles Round Trip, Paved Walk
Whitewater Falls stands at 811 feet. Standing not only as the tallest waterfall in North Carolina but also east of the Rockies! This impressive waterfall can be seen from various locations. There are two outlooks right near the waterfall which allows you to see the upper falls closely. Be careful as you get closer to the waterfall because it gets slippery with the large amount of water that falls down these falls.
The upper falls tumbles down 400 feet. The size makes it truly breathtaking. The upper part of the falls is found at the top of wooden stairs making it an easier hike. You won’t need to go through more challenging paths to get to the top. The hike packs a lot of beauty in a relatively short walk. This relatively easy and family-friendly walk is found near the border with South Carolina. In order to get to the lower falls you do need to take the hike from the South Carolina side.
Hikes between 2-3 miles round trip
Schoolhouse Falls
2.6 Miles, Round Trip; Dog Friendly
While not the tallest waterfall on this list, it is definitely beautiful! At the bottom of the 20-foot drop is a swimming-safe wading area. As such a popular swimming area, it does get pretty busy in the summer. This waterfall is one of the most popular in Panthertown Valley. Be sure to pack a map due to the many different trails in the area near these falls.
Crabtree Falls
3.0-3.5 Miles Round Trip
Found near McDowell and Yancey counties in North Carolina, Crabtree Falls marks the end of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Getting to this waterfall has two different trails. There is an easier 3.0-mile loop and a more strenuous 3.5-mile loop. This hike is particularly beautiful in the summer with so many wildflowers.
This 70-foot waterfall is a must-see! To find this trail head to Milepost 339.5 and find the store at the park and look for the “Falls” sign. The walk down is mostly level, you’ll pass the Amphitheater and a campground. You’ll find another sign stating “Crabtree Falls Trailhead.” Follow that sign for your hike.
Catawba Falls
2.7 Miles Round Trip; Dog Friendly
This lovely waterfall is just east of Asheville. The river rolls through the forest before cascading down several waterfalls. The hike is through a mostly shaded forest (but you should still use sunscreen). You’ll see beautiful moss and walk near the tendrils of the river. If you bring your dog along, remember they must stay on a leash.
This hike is moderately challenging. The trail will first get you to the Catawba River (about 0.2 miles in) then you will follow along the river to a newly built bridge that takes you over the river. This hike is moderately challenging because it will be going up in elevation following the river upstream. Along the way you’ll see some smaller waterfalls, keep going until you find the larger Catawba Falls.
Hickory Nut Falls
2.8 Miles Round Trip
Found in Chimney Rock State Park this waterfall is one of the tallest east of the Mississippi River. The hike is fairly moderate, it is also an out-and-back. It takes the average person about 45 minutes each way. This hike is not paved so I would not recommend this walk with strollers or wheelchairs.
At the base of the waterfall, you’ll find picnic tables, benches, and resting areas. Not only are there wonderful resting areas at the base of Hickory Nut Falls, but you’ll also find a very unique ecosystem. Many rare plants, amphibians, and some gorgeous flowers greet you for a relaxing time by the base of this waterfall in North Carolina.
Hikes that are 3+ miles round trip
Bridal Veil Falls
4.6 Miles Round Trip; Dog Friendly
This impressive 60-foot waterfall is absolutely breathtaking. Unless there has been a big rain, there isn’t a lot of water in the falls. Because of this, it is relatively safe and fun to stand behind the falls. Located in DuPont State Park there are many different paths to get to the falls. It is also located close to a parking lot if you are looking for just a short hike to a waterfall.
